ic! berlin was founded in 1996 by three friends in Berlin. The company's journey began with the use of an unconventional material, cold-rolled stainless steel, and the invention of a revolutionary mechanism, the screwless hinge system. When no manufacturer would produce the new design, the founders simply bought machines and started production in Berlin. Word of the new approach spread, and with guerrilla tactics, the young brand soon conquered the ranks of the design avant-garde. Making the most of very little has been the company's ethos ever since. Thirty years later, ic! berlin has won the SILMO d’Or and the Japan Eyewear Award numerous times. To this day, every frame is designed, engineered, and crafted by hand in Berlin.
The design of ic! berlin always features a screwless hinge paired with a finely crafted frame made of cold-rolled stainless steel. The FLEXARBON® collection is an exception: this innovative carbon fiber material was developed by ic! berlin to offer unparalleled ultralight comfort.
The ic! berlin portfolio includes three main design categories:
The CLASSIC collection focuses on classic shapes and their reinterpretations. It includes pantos, cat-eye, navigator frames, and the classic square shape. Although most models are made of cold-laminated stainless steel, there are also hybrid designs with cotton-based acetate.
SILK is the most minimalist collection. Inspired by Scandinavian design traditions, SILK is essential and discreet, allowing the wearer’s face to take center stage. It features a patented second-generation screwless hinge system. Each frame is designed to be ultralight yet extraordinarily durable.
The FLEXARBON® COLLECTION is based on the innovative FLEXARBON® material. Developed over three years of collaboration with scientists, FLEXARBON® employs techniques derived from aerospace technology, resulting in an ultralight material with unprecedented durability.
All ic! berlin collections are designed, engineered, and handcrafted in Berlin, Germany.
